  3. Another stunning creation by Clynton Caines.
  4. And this time it's FREEWARE.

  9. Stock Updator 1.0 is a system for updating stock prices automatically.
  10. The system involves viewing a free web page, that usually has 15 minute
  11. deferred quotes, at some constant rate. What results is a new web page that
  12. updates its information by itself. The alternative is to sit at the computer
  13. and "click" on reload every time you need the new prices. This way you 
  14. can do other more important things - like beat your head in for getting
  15. into this business.

  17. A refresh time of 2 minutes is a good (and the default setting). The user can
  18. customize this to 2 seconds if he/she wishes. All that does is let you know
  19. exactly when the web page your looking at updates its information (at a
  20. very high downloading cost). The file that does the job has directions for
  21. how to set this option.

  26. real-time.html and windinfo.html (or their universal counterparts) are the
  27. Copyright materials of Clynton Caines. Permission to modify the files is
  28. granted to anyone who downloads the archive from an ftp site. It is
  29. recommended that a copy be made before any editing. Here's why :

  31.       Using a copy will allow all the instructions to be easily obtainable. It
  32.       will also ensure that the Copyright and liability-related information is
  33.       within the document. In case you're wondering, deleting as many things
  34.       as possible from a file should make it smaller (this is almost a necessity
  35.       for slow connections). A Simple Text file, however, has at least 22 K and
  36.       that's about how much the files have now. It might make a difference on
  37.       machines other than a Mac??

  39. Note* This system should work on any computer.
  40.       I'm sure it works with Netscape Navigator  > 1.1 ?
  41.       I'm NOT sure about other Web Browsers.  (META)
  42.       Non-Mac Users may need to shorten the file
  43.       names or ".html" extension.

  45. Also* A home page on the internet is not required for this to
  46.       work. Just save the files on your own computer and use
  47.       your web browser to view the page. See for yourself.

  49. And*  This system does not have to connect to a stock prices
  50.       page. If you can find reason to view some other page
  51.       in this way, just replace the default link by that page.

  81. of October 1996. See the page owner's license agreement before linking to their
  82. page.

  87. Q: Why does it take so long to download the full page?
  88. A: Usually its caused by too many pictures being on the page. If you don't mind
  89.    missing some cool advertisements you can set your web browser not to auto-
  90.    download images.

  92. Q: Can I fix this by removing comments from the Real-Time distribution pages?
  93. A: Maybe. In most cases it wont matter, but if you want to see, make sure you
  94.    have a backup. You may find those comments very useful in the future.

  96. Q: Who is this Clynton guy and why is he so great?
  97. A: Well, he's not that great. A few things in Stock Updator 1.0 could have been
  98.    done better. Fact is however, some would require an additional page or some
  99.    wacky programming that only the experts' experts really know.

  101. Q: Are there any other cool programs that I may have missed out on?
  102. A: Try NoMoreCookies1.0. for the Mac.
  103.    This program gets rid of history and cookie files used by web browsers. Why?
  104.    Because, although you may not see it when you restart a browser, the file is
  105.    tipically left with all the info about where you've been. And you know where
  106.    you've been. Incidentally, if you've used it and your browser doesn't have one
  107.    of the files, then let it put both eyes on the same file.
